What happens to your body when you drink one, yes, ONE can of soda? The answer may shock you, and may even disgust you. Before sipping or serving this sugary beverage, read on to find out exactly what happens inside your body after consuming 1 can of soda.
First 10 minutes:
You've just consumed 10 teaspoons of sugar, 100% of your recommended daily intake. This means you shouldn't have ANYTHING else that contains sugar, including fruits and starches. So, after the 10 teaspoons of pure sugar hits your system, you would normally vomit because your system isn't designed to handle this, but the phosphoric acid cuts the flavor and allows you to keep it down.
Your blood sugar level increases drastically, causing a burst of insulin in your body. Your liver responds by converting any sugar whatsoever into fat.
Your body has completely absorbed the caffeine from the soda, causing your pupils to dilate and an increase in blood pressure. Your liver then responds by releasing more sugar into the bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked, preventing drowsiness.
Similar to a response to the drug heroin, your production of dopamine levels increase, tapping into the pleasure areas of your brain.
Due to the phosphoric acid binding the calcium, zinc and magnesium in your lower intestines, your metabolism further increases. The high levels of sugar and artificial sweeteners in your bloodstream will cause increased urination and the excretion of calcium.
Soda is a diuretic; the caffeine levels that cause increased urination will leave your body dehydrated, and the vitamins and minerals that would have supported bone growth and function have now been excreted from your body. You also loose sodium, water, and electrolytes, which is extremely dangerous for the function of your heart.
Please think twice before drinking and serving soda to your children. Soda consumption leads to poor health conditions and contributes greatly to diseases affecting too many of the U.S. population. Beware of soda and other sugary beverages, and keep your children educated as well. Opt for water or club soda with a splash of fresh juice instead.
Need other uses for soda? Pour a can of soda in your toilet and let it sit for 10 minutes. Clean with a toilet brush, flush, and admire your bleached potty. If it can do this to your toilet, imagine what it's doing to your insides!
